The Old School at Yealand Conyers

Simple Hostel Accommodation in Rural Lancashire

Hostel Accommodation for Groups in the Lancashire Countryside
The Old School at Yealand Conyers near Carnforth provides good simple hostel facilities that are ideal for group holidays. It is managed by the local Society of Friends (Quakers) on a not-for-profit basis. (Go to Printer Friendly Version of Page).
The Local Area
Though easily accessible from the M6, the Old School is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is in a limestone area, well wooded and rich in wildlife such as deer and a great abundance of insects, wildflowers and birds. Local walks afford impressive views of Morecambe Bay, the Lakeland fells and the Pennines. The RSPB bird reserve at Leighton Moss, well known for its bitterns, is within walking distance. Special visits and group activities can be arranged at the reserve.
Other Attractions
The village of Yealand Conyers lies close to both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales national parks. There are many castles, stately homes and pele towers within easy distance, as are the city of Lancaster and the ancient towns of Kendal (home to the Quaker Tapestry) and Kirkby Lonsdale.
1652 Country
For anyone interested in Quaker history the Old School at Yealand Conyers is an excellent base for exploring 1652 Country. It was in that year that the Society of Friends was established. Yealand Meeting House was built in 1692, and the Old School next door makes an ideal base for exploring the area. Brigflatts, Firbank Fell and the Quaker Tapestry in Kendal are all less than forty minutes drive away. The Warden will be pleased to provide more information, guides and speakers, if required.
The Accommodation

Clean and comfortable, and with full central heating, the hostel offers good self-catering accommodation at very reasonable prices. There is room for up to about 25 people, but we also welcome smaller groups.

Two bedrooms for group leaders are available, with a total of six beds. There are three other large rooms. These have no beds, but foam mattresses are provided for sleeping on the floor. Visitors must bring their own sleeping-bags, pillows and pillowcases. However if some members of your group require more privacy or comfort we can provide information on local bed and breakfast and the whole group can use the facilities at the hostel.
